New sleep laboratory: first study with a new antidepressant drug

Fraunhofer ITEM has extended the diagnostic capabilities in its clinical research by setting up a sleep laboratory with four beds in the Clinical Research Center Hannover. In collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Hannover Medical School, a clinical trial with an antidepressant drug candidate will be started in February 2018. Fraunhofer ITEM in Hannover is one of five study centers in Germany participating in this study. The aim is to investigate the effects of the new drug on the symptoms of depressive patients, but also on sleep disorders and other psychosomatic problems such as anxiety. To enable monitoring of sleep disorders, the study participants will spend several nights in the new sleep laboratory during the treatment phase.

The vital bodily functions and a webcam view of a test person in the sleep laboratory at the CRC Hannover are displayed on several screens. A doctor points to one of the curves displayed on the screen.
In addition to providing a live webcam stream of the bedroom, the screens allow the vital bodily functions of test persons to be monitored and analyzed in real time. (©Fraunhofer ITEM)
